Nicotine Salt E-Juices: What You Need to Know
Since nicotine salts hit the market, they have generated a buzz. Originally developed by JUUL Labs, nicotine salts offer a more potent dose of nicotine without the harsh throat hit of traditional e-juices. And because you are vaping higher concentrations of nicotine, you consume less juice making it economically savvy too. For many, nicotine salts offer a more satisfying experience that is closer to that of a traditional cigarette. If you want to learn more about nicotine salts, read our guide below.
Freebase Nicotine: The Gold Standard
Originally invented in the 1960’s by Malboro to make traditional cigarettes pack a bigger punch and be more addictive, freebase nicotine is the active compound that you find in standard e-juices.
Freebase nicotine is considered the ‘purest’ nicotine and is suspended in a mixture of vegetable glycerine and propylene glycol to create the e-juices you are used to using. This is the same nicotine used in smoking cessation devices such as nicotine gum or the patch.
What is Nicotine Salt?
Nicotine salt – also known as nic salts and saltnic – are not table salt or even crystals. It doesn’t tasty salt when you vape it and it doesn’t increase your sodium intake. Nicotine salt is a different chemical formulation of the same nicotine found in freebase nicotine. JULL Labs found that with the addition of benzoic acid, nicotine salts become more potent and smoother to consume. The acid lowers of pH of the nicotine to create a more stable compound that reduces that infamous throat hit of higher mg e-juice liquids.
A study in 2014 found that for e-cigarette devices and vape pens to approximate nicotine delivery from smoking, the nicotine levels in e-cigarette liquids would need to be close to 50 mg. The researchers also noted that such a high concentration of nicotine would reduce the amount of e-liquid consumed and therefore reduce the amount of risks associated with vaping.
Until nicotine salts hit the market, reaching 50 mg concentrations in e-liquids was virtually impossible. Unlike with freebase salts where the nicotine content never goes above 24 mg, the formulation of nicotine salts means the nicotine level can be twice as high with a more satisfying vape experience.
The Nicotine Salt Difference
When you switch to vaping an e-juice with nicotine salt, you will notice an immediate difference. Not only does vaping nicotine salt offer a similar sensation to smoking traditional cigarettes, but it vaporizes well at lower temperatures – making it the perfect solution for users that favor small vape devices like pod vapes and JUULs over sub-ohm tanks.
Is Nicotine Salt More Addictive? Is It Safe?
This is a legitimate question as nicotine salts do offer higher concentrations of an addictive substance, however, the issue has yet to be studied. It is important to note that the higher risk of dependence would be determinate upon the higher concentrations of nicotine with each inhalation and not with the formulation of nicotine salt itself.
Benzoic acid is the only additional ingredient included in nicotine salt that users do not already ingest in traditional freebase nicotine e-juices. The World Health Organization advises consuming no more than 5 mg of benzoic acid per kilogram of body weight per day – which would be extremely different to hit through vaping as there is just a few milligrams of acid in 1 mL of nicotine salt.
Buying Nicotine Salts
